Why the Colder Box Costs Less

A freezer holds 0°F against a 70°F room. A fridge holds 37°F against the same room — less than half the temperature difference to fight. On thermodynamics alone the freezer should lose. It wins anyway, for four reasons that have nothing to do with how cold it gets inside.

A lid, not a door

Cold air is denser than warm air, so it sinks. Lift a chest freezer's lid and the cold sits in the box; only the warmer air at the top spills out. Swing a fridge door open and the cold pours out of the doorway, and the compressor has to re-chill a boxful of room-temperature air. This is the single reason an upright freezer uses 30-40% more electricity than a chest freezer of identical capacity.

Opened a few times a week, not a few times an hour

Nobody browses a chest freezer. You open it to put a month of food in and to take a package out. A kitchen refrigerator is opened dozens of times a day, and every one of those openings is a small refrigeration job the compressor has to redo.

No defrost heater, no ice maker, no dispenser

Most chest freezers are manual-defrost: you chip the ice out once a year and that's the whole system. Frost-free fridges and uprights run a heating element on a timer to melt frost off the coils — and then the compressor has to remove that heat again. You pay twice. Add an ice maker, a through-door water dispenser, interior lights, and the anti-sweat heaters some doors use, and a large fridge carries a stack of small loads a chest freezer simply doesn't have.

Full stays cold, empty does not

A packed freezer is mostly thermal mass. Frozen food holds its temperature between compressor cycles, so a 75-90% full chest freezer barely runs. A refrigerator is mostly air by volume, and air holds no cold at all. This is also why a mostly-empty second fridge is such a bad deal: it's paying to chill air.

The honest caveat: divide by capacity and the gap mostly closes. The chest freezer uses about 23 kWh per cubic foot per year; a 19.5 cu ft refrigerator uses about 21 kWh per cubic foot if it's Energy Star and 28if it isn't. Per unit of volume they're in the same range — the freezer is doing harder work, and its hardware is good enough to roughly break even on it. What decides the annual bill is that the freezer is a smaller box you open far less often.

The Garage Second Fridge vs. a Chest Freezer

This is where the comparison stops being academic. The old refrigerator that got demoted to the garage when the kitchen was remodeled is usually the single most expensive appliance in the house per unit of food stored — and it is usually storing frozen meat.

A pre-2010 fridge uses around 1100 kWh/year on the sticker, and the sticker assumes a 70°F room. A garage that sits above 100°F in summer adds roughly 30% — call it $229 a year. A 15 cu ft chest freezer in that same garage, carrying the same ambient penalty, costs $73 a year.

Swapping the garage fridge for a chest freezer saves about $156a year — and buys you more frozen storage than the fridge's freezer compartment ever had.

Two conditions. First, you have to actually unplug and recycle the old fridge, not move it to the basement — many utilities pay $50-$100 to haul it away. Second, this only works if what you store is frozen. A freezer will not hold your drinks.
