How Much Does It Cost to Run a Dryer?

A standard vented electric clothes dryer pulls about 3,000 watts while the heating element is on. At the 2024 US average rate of $0.16/kWh, that is roughly $0.48 per hour of run time, or about $0.36 for a typical 45-minute load. Five loads a week runs around $7.79 a month. The Formula

Cost per load = (watts ÷ 1,000) × cycle hours × price per kWh

Dividing watts by 1,000 converts to kilowatts. Multiplying by the cycle length in hours gives kilowatt-hours (kWh) — the unit your utility bills you in. Multiply by your price per kWh and you have the cost of one load.

Worked example (3,000W dryer, 45-minute cycle, $0.16/kWh): (3,000 ÷ 1,000) × 0.75 × 0.16 = 3 kW × 0.75 hours × $0.16 = $0.36 per load.

Why Dryers Cost What They Do

Heat is what costs money

Roughly 90% of a dryer's electricity goes to the heating element. The drum motor only draws 200-400W on its own. That is why air-drying or running shorter cycles cuts the bill so directly — you are skipping the expensive part.

A vented dryer constantly heats fresh air

Standard vented dryers pull room air in, heat it, run it through wet clothes, then blow the warm humid air outside. Every minute of heat is dumped out the vent. A heat pump dryer recycles that air through a closed loop, which is why it uses roughly half the energy per load.

Most of the dollar lever is cycle length

You pay for runtime, not the rated wattage. A clean lint screen, an unblocked vent hose, a properly spun load from the washer, and a moisture sensor cycle that stops as soon as clothes are dry all shorten the cycle. Five extra minutes per load is about $15 a year for a typical household.

Clean the lint screen every load

A clogged filter restricts airflow and adds 5-10 minutes to every cycle. It is the single highest-ROI dryer habit.

Use the moisture sensor cycle

Auto-sensor cycles shut off as soon as clothes are dry, saving 10-15% versus a fixed-time setting that overdries.

Spin clothes longer in the washer

A high-spin wash removes more water, so the dryer runs fewer minutes. This alone cuts dryer time by 10-20%.

A gas dryer still uses around 300-400W of electricity to run the drum and controls, but it burns natural gas for heat. Per load, gas typically costs 30-50% less than electric resistance drying in most US markets. The upfront machine is $50-$100 more, and you need a gas hookup. A heat pump electric dryer is now competitive with gas on running cost without the gas line.

Do dryer balls or aluminum foil really save electricity?

Wool dryer balls do save a bit — they separate clothes so hot air circulates better, cutting cycle time by 10-25%. That is real money over a year. Aluminum foil balls do the same thing and also reduce static, but they wear out. Dryer sheets do not affect drying time and can actually coat the lint filter and reduce airflow, which makes the dryer run longer.
